Trust what is calling
A few years ago, my husband began working as a therapist. The decision to go back to school for this in his mid-50s felt sudden, mysterious, and more than a little risky… but crystal clear.
He pursued it with a commitment that never wavered, even through massive shifts and challenges, personally and globally. It’s like part of him knew that this alignment would be necessary a few years down the road, for him and for the world.
And now, down the road we are, with this mysterious calling having taken root in his life - our lives. He is more joyful and resourced than I’ve ever known him to be, even in the midst of * gestures around at fires raging all around. * His clients are doing better than they otherwise would be too, benefiting as they are from his vocation.
This is one of the readiest examples I have of what it is to trust a calling—and to later find out, at least in part, what the call was about. Sure, he knew back in 2021 then that things were getting grim, but didn’t necessarily put together how necessary this way of serving others would become. At the time, it simply felt like what he needed to do.
And thank goodness he listened. Because now, in the spring of 2026—this swirling, chaotic, noisy, baffling, consuming, perilous bout of rapids in the river of our evolution—there’s no shortage of souls for him to support.
Unlike my sweetie, I don’t have a single moment to point to. But I realize I too am feeling nevertheless buoyed by a number of things that I’ve been mysteriously called toward over the years (martial arts, energy work, creativity, sobriety, certain friendships) that, for whatever reason, have taken root in me. They’ve held me close, pointing me back to my own body, intuition, and guidance.
They’ve also given me opportunities to support others, which feels key in all of this. Transmission, sharing, giving away what we know, fortifies our learning in untold ways.
If you are reading this I bet you have something like this too. What has called to you in your life, mysteriously or otherwise? Do you see how it is (or how it could be) keeping you upright, resourced and helpful in these times of madness?
Do you believe it, do you trust it?
If not, no presh, me lovelies, but it might be time to, for the sake of everyone. Because once we’ve found our own steadiness in the swirl, once ripples of calm move out from our field to those still struggling, without us needing to do anything at all.
The map to coherence lives inside that which calls to each of us. The whispers aren’t batshit hallucinations. They’re not pulling you from reality; they’re inviting you to a new one.
What is calling you?
Maybe you have no idea, or a vague sense, or maybe something feels clear but there’s still some hesitation. Wherever you are in this, please share in the comments if you are willing. It will normalize this experience for everyone.
If you’d like to be guided deeper in this exploration and happen to be in the bay area, Grace Boda and I are once again leading Portals to Wisdom on May 2 in the glorious Oakland hills. It’s a day about getting connected back up - or connected more deeply - to our calling, our inner coherence.
